Did you know the Wright brothers had a younger sister named Katharine? Katharine’s outgoing personality balanced the reserve of her famous brothers in the presence of some of the world’s most prominent leaders who flocked to witness Wilbur and Orville’s great flights in Europe and the U.S. in 1908–09. Katharine was the only one of five siblings to have a college degree. She married Harry Haskell, an Oberlin College classmate and editor of The Kansas City Star at the age of 53 and left Hawthorn Hill, the home she shared with Orville, to join Harry in KC. Katharine, like her famous brothers, had no children. All Wright family members today descend from the two oldest Wright brothers, Reuchlin and Lorin.
