Did you know the Wright brothers invented their flying machines in the back of their bicycle shop on the west side of Dayton, Ohio? They started out in the printing business and later expanded into bicycle sales, repair and manufacturing. Their top-of-the-line bike was the “Van Cleve” featuring the Wrights’ sealed, self-lubricating hub design. Only four Van Cleve bicycles are known to survive today. Their fourth of five bicycle shops is still standing as a feature of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. It is well worth a visit to Dayton to learn how these two unassuming inventors took mankind from wheels to wings.
